Our Mosaic Pathway ~ Work in Progress ~ Part One

Many years ago, when I was on my Big OE, I stumbled upon an antiques and junk shop somewhere in California (I can't now remember exactly where I was) that had absolutely stunning pathways, all made of broken china mosaics.  I absolutely loved them, and wanted to make one of my own.  Years later, when I had a house that needed new pathways, I set to work on my first little bit of mosaic path.

For this mosaic, I used coins that I collected from my travels, and some old New Zealand coinage, as well as broken china, off-cuts from our kitchen tiles, and stones from our stone pit which was swallowed up by extensions to our house.

The path has grown slowly over the years.  This little section is outside my sewing room window, so I wanted to do something that would look a bit like a quilt.  It's a bit rough in places :)

It's a family project...Mr K and Miss Missy have also made their own bits.

A lot of our inspiration has come from the mosaic garden at The Giants House in Akaroa.

We've learnt a lot along the way...some things work better than others... and we are still learning :)

Old blue jeans

Do you have a favourite pair of jeans?  Jeans that are just so comfortable, and you feel great when you're wearing them?  But what do you do when those jeans get a hole in the knee?  People do all sorts of different things with old jeans!  Some people turn their old jeans into bags or pencil cases, and even quilts!  Who remembers the amazing episode of Project Runway when the contestants had to make outfits out of jeans?

But if you're anything like me, you just can't bring yourself to part with those old jeans.  I have a pair of jeans that I've had since I was 17.  I loved those jeans!  My sister gave them to me, and they were just the style that I loved (back then!  Oh, they are pleated jeans, cringe).  So, I was pretty devastated when they got a hole (I always seem to get holes in the thigh, not the knee, no idea why).  So I patched them.  I started out with just one patch, but they got another hole, and another...and another...and....

I washed those jeans as I would my most delicate silk treasures, but still they got more holes.  Eventually, I just had to accept that it was time to stop patching them.  I can't bring myself to part with them though!  I still love those jeans #^_^#



I have another pair of favourite jeans with a hole (in the thigh again, go figure?) .... Should I start another pair of patchwork jeans?  I think I'm going to have to!
